Sociology is the study of society. It is a social science—a term with which it is sometimes synonymous—that uses various methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis to develop and refine a body of knowledge about human social activity, often with the goal of applying such knowledge to the pursuit of social welfare. Subject matter ranges from the micro level of agency and interaction to the macro level of systems and social structures.

Sociology is both topically and methodologically a very broad discipline. Its traditional focuses have included social stratification (i.e., "class"), social mobility, religion, secularization, law, and deviance, while approaches have included both qualitative and quantitative research techniques. As all spheres of human activity are sculpted by social structure and individual agency, sociology has gradually expanded its focus to further subjects, such as medical, military and penal institutions, the Internet, and even the role of social activity in the development of scientific knowledge. The range of social scientific methods has also broadly expanded. The linguistic and cultural turns of the mid-twentieth century led to increasingly interpretative, hermeneutic, and philosophic approaches to the analysis of society. Conversely, recent decades have seen the rise of new mathematically and computationally rigorous techniques, such as agent-based modelling and social network analysis.

Can anyone give me information on which sociologists that have commented that students from nuclear families?

A. This review of social factors affecting education leads you to the specific studies that the author uses. One of the factors is single parenthood. The relationship the author highlights relates only to early education. As you indicate one of the problems with focusing only on the relaltionship between single parenthood and educational achievement is the omission of other complicating or causal factors such as income/ education of parents/ access to education facilities/emotionalwell being/etc. So some of the best analyses come from the longitudinal studies which are able to make the most sophisticated analyses about family styles and education For Australia have a look at the Australian Institute of Family Studies web site and… [cont.]

How do sociologists view the reasons teens join gangs?
Q. Yes, it is a paper and i don't want to hear anything stupid. Just trying to figure out more ideas that i can elaborate on. I don't care if it is a page or a sentence; anything helps.

A. Its kind of a survival mechanism. Generally gangs are a symptom of poverty and strife, so people want to join forces with others who share their point of view. Strength in numbers, check the history channel online, they have a program that features gngs in prison and foreign countries and in like Okland.
