Social psychology is a type of social science that is concerned with individuals' thoughts, feelings and behavior as they affect or are affected by other individuals. Scholars in this interdisciplinary area are typically either psychologists or sociologists, though all social psychologists employ both the individual and the group as their units of analysis.

Despite their similarity, psychological and sociological researchers tend to differ in their goals, approaches, methods, and terminology. They also favor separate academic journals and professional societies. The greatest period of collaboration between sociologists and psychologists was during the years immediately following World War II. Although there has been increasing isolation and specialization in recent years, some degree of overlap and influence remains between the two disciplines.

I need ideas for a social psychology experiment?
Q. I'm in an undergraduate social psychology course and I need to do a small experiment based on some social psychology theory. Some sort of "everyday life study" is preferable and observational studies are allowed. I seem to be completely blank and all of the ideas I've come up with so far seem to be either unethical, not interesting, too complex, or all of the above. :( I have to make up my mind within two weeks. Any suggestions?

A. Something about how people react on sites such as Yahoo answers? What questions make people want to answer, what questions irritate people, why people think certain answers are the best? You could put your subjects in front of Yahoo Answers (or similar sites), and chart their emotional reactions to questions over a period of time. Just a thought.

Q. What is the most popular research method among social psychologists?

A. Social psychologists tend to use experimental designs most often. If they use a correlational design, it's typically just as a preliminary study to help set up later experiments to determine the causal chain of a particular phenomenon.

How is validity between Surveys and Field Studies different in social psychology?
Q. I understand there is a diff in terms of construct and face validity but is there more to it?

A. You have more external validity with surveys and more internal validity with field studies.
