Social psychology is the study of the relations between people and groups. Scholars in this interdisciplinary area are typically either psychologists or sociologists, though all social psychologists employ both the individual and the group as their units of analysis. Despite their similarity, psychological and sociological researchers tend to differ in their goals, approaches, methods, and terminology. They also favor separate academic journals and professional societies. The greatest period of collaboration between sociologists and psychologists was during the years immediately following World War II. I think your first priority should be to get research experience in psychology. Since you have finished school, perhaps you could get a job as a research assistant? An alternative to that would be volunteering in a social psych lab that was doing research that was interesting to you. Research is one thing that every school is looking for and won't do without. It helps that you have an RN degree! I have been told that many non-psych majors are actually more desirable as Ph.D students, because they have a greater breadth of knowledge and experience. I'm sure that your degree would especially give you an edge if you were interested in neuroscience or physiological psychology.
