Psychology is the study of human or animal mental functions and behaviors. In this field, a professional practitioner or researcher is a psychologist. Psychologists are classified as social or behavioral scientists. Psychological research can be considered either basic or applied. Psychologists attempt to understand the role of mental functions in individual and social behavior, while also exploring underlying physiological and neurological processes. Basic research in psychology includes perception, cognition, attention, emotion, motivation, brain functioning, personality, behavior, and interpersonal relationships. Some, especially depth psychologists, also consider the unconscious mind. Psychologists employ empirical methods to determine causal and correlational relationships between psychosocial variables. In addition, or in opposition, to employing empirical and deductive methods, clinical psychologists sometimes rely upon symbolic interpretation and other inductive techniques. While psychological knowledge is typically applied to the assessment and treatment of mental health problems, it is also applied to understanding and solving problems in many different spheres of human activity. The vast majority of psychologists are involved in clinical, counseling, and school positions, some are employed in the industrial and organizational setting, and other areas such as human development and aging, sports, health, the media, legal, and forensics. Psychology incorporates research from the social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities. From Wikipedia under the

I think 90% of the questions post in the psychology section has very little to do with psychology. Why is that? Asked by Noi S - Sun Mar 16 11:57:54 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. I suspect it may be that a lot of people have a very superficial idea of what psychology is. You will note that a lot of askers like to self-diagnose ("I'm ADD, OCD, depressed...") yet the rest of their question indicates they have no idea what they are talking about. Obviously the psychological knowledge of many is limited to having heard about Freud and a few of his words (without knowing what they mean or even the correct words for them) such as "Unconscious" and "subconscious." Others are simply using the site as if they are writing to Ann Landers for advice on their personal lives and relationships. Still others seem to think "psychology" has to do with "psychic" and ask about mind-reading and nonsense like that. And then there are… [cont.] Answered by Dr. Bob - Sun Mar 16 12:16:26 2008 According to Psychology what are ways to discipline a child? Q. Positive reinforcement - when the child does something desired, they should be rewarded immediately with something that is a treat to the child (eg: lolly). At first they should be rewarded every time (continuous reinforcement) but gradually reward them on random occasions when the desired behavior is shown. This is proven to be the most effective way to reinforce. 2. Negative reinforcement - teach the child that when they take away a negative stimulus (for example homework or doing the dishes) they are rewarded (example lolly or watching TV). 3. Punishment - when the child shows an undesirable behavior, they should be punished immediately afterward, if there is too long a gap then the child may be confused about… [cont.] Answered by Bumble bee - Fri Sep 26 08:21:08 2008 What concerns would someone have about the activities of psychology?
