Developmental dyspraxia is a motor learning difficulty that can affect planning of movements and co-ordination as a result of brain messages not being accurately transmitted to the body (NHS Direct, 2008)" It may be diagnosed in the absence of other motor or sensory impairments like cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease.

My 4 year old has been diagnosed with Dyspraxia verbal and developmental?
Q. I would like to know if there is anyone else who has gone through what we are at the moment, we see a speech therapist weekly but there are many other areas we need help in. His behaviour is not normal 4 year old behaviour, he is very impulsive and cannot seem to help himself from hurting other children in a playground, He seems to have little understanding that what he is doing is wrong. I am forever having to explain to other parents about his condition and not many are understanding.i would love to hear from other parents who may have experienced this and if things will be ok down the track, i cant seem to get information on whether this is something that is long term.

A. These are issues that can be resolved. I have worked in Early Intervention for 10 years. His behavior probably stems more from his lack of communication skills. He may also be having receptive language problems that interferes with his ability to understand the consequences of his actions. I would suggest that you look into a full or half day Early Intervention day program that he can go to. Many times these services are provided for free. That way he can be evaluated for other services such as Occupational therapy also. Teachers in these centers are generally trained to deal with developmental behavioral problems and creative with coming up with discipline.

What really is a child with dyspraxia?
Q. I have read the definition but can anyone describe it from actual experience. I suspect that a former pupil of mine falls in this category. The child, six years old, has yet to be diagnosed by a developmental pediatrician for some kind of disorder.

A. Take hope- as a child I suffered from this and was not speaking clearly until after seven. It was not diagnosed (since in those days it was unheard of) but subsequent research on my part has pinpointed that this was the problem. However it in no way affected my subsequent development and education.
